This is one of those albums rather difficult to review. If this cd had come out 15 years ago, it would have been one of my classical outputs of my young metal years. As we are in 2005 I don’ t really know if anyone needs such music anymore. With
the possibilities to make pretty cheap and relatively qualitative
recordings, this album laughs at any sound system trying to get some
differentiated tones from the cd. The sound is pretty bad, the guitars
are scratchy and undifferentiated, the drums almost don’t deserve this
name and the vocals seem to come from a deep cavern. Some call it true,
and if this has been made on purpose, well it has to be respected. I
really can’ t say much about the songs. As the whole thing is rather
monotone. The music presented by Black Witchery can be categorized as
some old school black metal, very fast, raw, evil but to my ears badly
annoying. As said, for many it could be real genuine and true black
metal. The music reminds me a little bit of early Impaled Nazarene (Tol
kormpt norz norz norz –what a beautiful name!- can be in some ways
named as far reference), with short and blasty songs that don’t differ that much one from the other. The
cover is drawn as the music is made. A pencil or pen drawn goathead with
a crucified Jesus and some devils slaying angels. Pretty spartanic
indeed.. For
me, the output of such kind of music is nowadays not so easy to digest.
Especially thinking about the lots of bands, making high qualitative and
original music this is one of the rather superflual outputs. But as I
said, if Black Witchery did that on purpose, no one can forbid it... rating: 5/10
