The joy of the new generation.

Norwegian band born in 1993, Crest of Darkness reach their fifth album (the second with My Kingdom Music) without indeed adding too much to their music (if not for a more moderate use of the keyboards). Let's say that the band, commanded by the leader Ingar Amlien (Bass/Vocals), after all these years of activity, goes straight  its way, a way  made of a Death- dirtied Black Metal, spiced up with some melodic part that add the general mood to the songs. This time too the band doesn't surprise us at all while "sending" to release this "Give us the Power to do your Evil"  which represents what we could define as  a well played and, above all, a well produced black metal album (naturally son of the second wave) . And it 's really this point the one that could make the purists, who have always given no much consideration to releases of this kind, look down their noses. Indeed, if on the one hand we notice that the group knows how to act with the instruments in its hand, one the  other hand the too clean production results a little bit out of context,  even if, in reality, this choice cannot be  totally rejected, because it`s no Raw Black Metal. Therefore  we come to the usual conclusion… some people will be convinced supporters of the band, while others will point them out as "traitors" or not "true"…but we are here in order to analyze an album and not in order to lose us in trivial conversations. It's however allowed to expect no utter masterpiece from a band who divides opinions in so a sharp way.

After a brief intro, the first song "Antichrist" starts fast and violent enough, vaguely reminding us  in some riffs to the black metal of the Swedish school. Good the bass work which isn`t left apart  but is active during the track. Some melodic part of synth and then the massacre starts again incessant with furious blast-beats and profuse violence.   

"Druj Nasu" is the song that we find, as video clip, in the multimedia part of the cd too (a part  which is enough rich and well done with biography, photos, and so on…). The influences of a certain type of death metal become more marked with mid-tempo, and stop & go. Not a bad track and also the video is rather effective. "Cadavergod" attacks us with a fast and violent beginning, the riffing closely reminds us of something from Dark Funeral and Dimmu Borgir ( "intermediary" period - Spiritual Black Dimension).  with it 3 minutes it's the shortest piece of the cd, and, surely for this, it results the more violent one. The end left through a  fade-out effect adds a touch of particularity to the track. 

Instead, "Your demons" is a piece we could completely label as death metal  if it weren`t for the screaming. We find stops & go with an enough various and incisive drumming, stopping guitars and some Thrash influences in the intermediary part. It is an enough articulated song that inevitably reminds of the Swedish melodic death scene. The technical preparation of the musicians sticks out as well as (once more) the good use of the bass. Also the following track, "Death and Pleasure", remembers a lot closely Sweden and its sonorities. With "Complete Revenge" the blind fury masters the whole beginning of the track just in order to transform itself   into a thrash and then melodic rhythm with some choruses that exalt the somehow dark melody. Good guitar solos run each other after. "I love your pallid Skin" closes a part of the cd and,  as the title lets us easily imagine, we deal with a piece which is almost entirely played on slow rhythms and instrumental parts. 

The end of the disk gives space to the title track which is divided in three parts (respectively part 6 - part 66 - part 666) where all ingredients described before converge. Therefore we are talking of fast and violent parts, mid tempo, melody and good instrumental technique.  

In conclusion, this last work from Crest of Darkness won't succeed in making  those people, who don't chew "modern" sonorities in a context Black Metal , change their mind. But allow me to say that, here, there isn`t  really much of Black. We deal with a good mix of extreme metal, with a perhaps too clean production which will make surely the  joy of the "new generation" of metal fans,  grown up with the clean, but powerful sound of the second Swedish wave. Those people who look for  dirty and raw sonorities won't almost find anything interesting in this cd, for all the others, instead, Crest of Darkness could be a pleasant surprise.

Gruppo Norvegese risalente addirittura al 1993 i Crest of Darkness arrivano al loro quinto album (il secondo con My Kingdom Music) senza effettivamente aggiungere troppo alla loro musica (se non per un uso piu moderato delle tastiere). Diciamo che la band, guidata dal leader Ingar Amlien (Basso/Voce), dopo tutti questi anni di attività procede, dritta per la sua strada fatta di un black metal sporcato di death e con qualche spruzzata melodica che arrichisce il mood generale dei brani. Anche questa volta, la band non ci stupisce affatto mandando alle stampe questo “Give us the power to do your evil” che rappresenta quello che può essere definito un album di black metal (figlio, naturalmente, della seconda ondata) ben suonato e soprattutto ben prodotto. Ed è proprio questo che potrebbe fare torcere il naso ai puristi del genere che hanno sempre preso poco in considerazione uscite del genere. Se in fatti da un lato notiamo che il gruppo sa come muoversi con gli strumenti in mano, dall’altro la produzione troppo pulita risulta un tantino fuori contesto anche se, in realtà, non trattandosi di Raw Black Metal, questo tipo di scelta non è completamente da bocciare. Quindi, siamo alle solite…ci saranno affermati sostenitori della band e di conseguenza chi li additerà come “traditori” o poco “true”…ma noi siamo qui per analizzare un album e non perderci in discorsi di poco conto. E’ lecito però, per una band che divide così nettamente, non aspettarsi chissà quale capolavoro…

Dopo una breve intro, il primo pezzo “Antichrist” parte abbastanza veloce e violento ricordando vagamente in qualche riff il black metal della scuola svedese. Buono il lavoro del basso non lasciato in disparte ma attivo nel corso del brano. Qualche stacco melodico di synth e il massacro riparte incessante con blast beat furiosi e violenza a profusione.

“Druj Nasu” è il pezzo che troviamo anche nella parte multimediale del cd (abbastanza ricca e ben fatta con biografia, foto ecc…) come video clip. Le influenze di un certo tipo di death metal si fanno più marcate con mid-tempo, stacchi e ripartenze. Non male come pezzo e anche il video è abbastanza efficace. “Cadavergod” ci assale con un inizio veloce e violento, il riffing ricorda da vicino qualcosa dei Dark Funeral e Dimmu Borgir (del periodo “intermedio” – Spiritual Black Dimension). E’ il pezzo più corto dell’intero cd con i suoi 3 minuti e sicuramente per questo risulta il più violento. Il finale lasciato in fade-out aggiunge un tocco di particolarità alla traccia.

“Your demons” è invece un pezzo completamente etichettabile come death metal se non fosse per lo screaming. Troviamo stacchi e ripartenze con un drumming abbastanza vario e incisivo, chitarre stoppate e qualche influenza Thrash nel parte intermedia. Song abbastanza articolata che ricorda inevitabilmente la scena death melodica svedese. Risalta molto la preparazione tecnica dei musicisti e (ancora una volta) il buon uso del basso. Anche la traccia seguente “Death and Pleasure” ricorda molto da vicino la Svezia e le sue sonorità. Con “Revenge complete” la furia cieca la fa da padrone per tutto l’inizio della traccia per tramutarsi nella sua metà con un’andatura thrash e poi ancora melodica con dei cori in sottofondo che ne esaltano la melodia un po’ dark. Si rincorrono soli di chitarra di buona fattura. “I love your pallid skin” conclude una parte del disco e, come è facile immaginarsi sin dal titolo, si tratta di un pezzo giocato su ritmi lenti e soffusi quasi completamente strumentale.

La fine del disco lascia spazio alla title track che si divide in tre parti (rispettivamente part 6 – part 66 – part 666) dove vanno a convogliare tutti gli ingredienti descritti prima. Si tratta quindi di parti veloci e violente, mid tempo, melodia e buona tecnica.
