review by Matthew Haumschild___

Iwas afraid I was in for some boring music. I was wrong.

This was one of those albums where it didn’t me long to start liking it which is kind of rare for me. It’s rare because I usually try to analyze it before I form an opinion. I think this is a rare compliment for a band I can give. The last time I liked something right away was “The Love Crave.” Don’t get me wrong though, I like the Love Crave a lot more and that is a completely different kind of band altogether. Although, I must admit, I started to criticize the band before I heard the music. When I read this was a “death-metal” band, read the goofy band name, and saw the less than original and rather dull album cover, I was afraid I was in for some boring music. I was wrong.

The fact sheet I was given said that the band could not be compared to any other. Well, now it didn’t say that exactly, but I can compare them to other bands. A band I reviewed, not that long ago, “Despite” out of Sweden sounds something like this band but I would like to compare Cypecore more to an earlier form of In Flames or Soilwork and what do all three bands have in common? Oh yeah. The guitar-work, anyway sounds very much like those bands I’ve mentioned above, now the vocal work sounds like Marco Aro when he was in The Haunted. I guess what I am trying to say, is that Cypecore sounds like a Swedish melodic death metal band and if I may say, they’re quite good. For a first album I say they’re off to a good start.

I went straight to “Everdying.” They’re first musical track on the CD. That’s what grabbed my attention; it was the guitar work and musical composition. It was complex enough that it kept me wanting to hear more and more. The singer sounds like most other singers out there, lots of monotonous low-end growls and not so much screaming…like Marco Aro. The guitars weren’t playing super fast or anything, just heavy and technical but not to the point where it became progressive or Opeth sounding. Cypecore also isn’t afraid to add keyboards either which adds dimension to their sound that I feel is a crucial component.

“…And Death Was Nothing To Him” had a lot more melodic guitar work in it where one guitar player would be playing one thing and the rhythm guitar and bass would be playing something heavy and fast. The song is very mosh-worthy, where I could see a group of dedicated fans throwing it down. I felt the song was multi-faceted, where it didn’t stick with one style of rhythm and bar count, like 4:4 time. The synth in this song brings you to another place altogether which makes it such a great track.

“Control Yourself” was unique where I felt like I was in a different place all together. The keyboards took the song and made the band more sci-fi industrial which is quite cool because most bands just like to stick to the genre they’re playing to and Cypecore just broke that rule with that song. The guitars and the drumming combined with the bass in certain spots make the song heavier than hell like a locomotive coming at you then it changes back to it’s original theme the song started out at. Best song on the album.

High praise goes to the producer, engineer and mixer on this one. This was one of the rare albums where I could actually….hear….the bass! Yes THE BASS! So many albums where I don’t hear it or if I do, it’s quite small and made insignificant, so thank you. As for everything else, I have no complaints. The guitars sound awesome, the drums sound great, and the vocals sound just perfect. I’d love to jam out to this CD in a car at high volume.

Overall, this is a great CD and you’d be a fool not to buy it. Matter of fact, go buy it, show your friends and I know they’ll buy it. Great music. I feel the band hit a homerun with this one.

            9/10
