Grayscale was pratically born in Summer 2000 from the ashes of "Four Bitches", as new members, drummer Jamne and guitarist  Matti H. replaced old members, and joined guitarist/vocalist Miika and the bassist Matti R. in the old FB lineup.

After a coupleof months of training and composing new songs, the band went to the Watercastle studio to record 3 brand new songs. Jenni Hytonen from Janne's former band came to play session Keyboards for the recording. New name, GRAYSCALE, was created during the session of a new promo "The first lament". CD came out 11/2000 sounding very melodic &angushed, just as intend to.

In january 2001, the band signed a two album deal Sound Riot Records. At that point they also decided to take Jenni as an official member, and started reharsing and composing new songs for the album. Also,at thhat point, a new vocalist Lasse Harma was taken in the band to sing the clean parts while Miika wsa still singing the parts needed "rawer" interpretation.

With the highest budget of Sound Riot, the labum was recorded at LaLa studios and mastered at Finnvox Studios with well-know producers.

THe atmosphere on the 9 songs of "When the ghosts are gone" is dark and desperate , yet catchy. Full melody and emotion and a hauting atmosphere.

Esordio assolutamente positivo per questa band finlandese, che cerca il salto qualità dopo un travagliato passato underground; Un cd di puro gothic metal che farà la gioa di coloro che ascoltano band come Sentenced e Amorphis; Se pensate alla band trend dal sound melodico stile Him, qui non vi è proprio traccia; Le 9 traccie di questo cd, sono ben curate a livello compositivo e denotano la buona preparazione dei musicisti anche dal punto di vista tecnico; Il lavoro svolto al Finnvox studios sebbene sia abbastanza buono per quanto riguarda la fase di mixaggio presenta qualche difetto.

I nostri pur non inventando niente di nuovo son riusciti a confezionare un lavoro più che valido ma che putroppo non gode di grande pubblicità e grande diffusione... la band è sotto l'ala protettrice dell'etichetta portoghese Sound Riot e devo dire che l'unico problema è reperire questo cd.......

Chi apprezza gli ultimi lavori di Sentenced, Amorphis, Katatonia non potrà rimanere indifferente a questo cd, che inizia subito con la stupenda "The world today" che avvolge nella sua atmosfera decadente che richiama tantissimo qualcosa dell'ultimo lavoro dei Katatonia, anche per quanto riguarda le vocal di Lasse che dà il meglio di sè in virtù dell'avvolgente melodia decadente che caratterizza la song. Si prosegue con la Sentenced-oriented "A Dead Season" che riesce davvero a coinvolgere; Grande lavoro alle chitarre che riescono ad imprimire il giusto groove attraverso fraseggi e ritmiche sempre azzeccate ;

La successiva "Gray Singer" non è all'altezza delle prime due canzoni e si denota purtroppo in maniera più evidente come la registrazione della voce a mio avviso non spicca ed è registrata bassa rispetto alla parte strumentale.

La track n.4 "Squeeze" ci presenta il chitarrista "Miika Partonene"alle raw vocals; Il nostro lascia intravedere qualche ingenuità tecnica , ma le raw vocals ben si adattono alla struttura della song...sempre decadente e ben suonata.

Si prosegue con "The Fire inside me" che non fa certo gridare al miracolo sebbene mantiene alto l'indice di qualità....sebbene non cambi di molto il tema del cd, e forse l'unico difetto fin qui, è la monotonia del sound....sono tutte buone songs ma ascoltate l'una dietro l'altra rischiano di annoiare........nemmeno lo finisco di pensare che "Absent" smentisce tutto ..grazie al tempo più cadenzato e alla precisa ricerca di opportuni passaggi atmosferici che rendono la song molto coinvolgente.

"Shape in the Shadows" è un tentativo ben riuscito di creare atmosfera realizzando una song trascinante e al tempo stesso molto melodica, e dal ritornello ammaliante. Si prosegue con "Cast Inside" una song ben riuscita e ancora molto ben suonata da questa band finlandese che non si smentisce in quanto a dote compositiva e tecnica esecutiva. La title-track che chiude il cd è una song atmosferica sussurrata e costruita attorno ad un arpeggio di chitarra molto profondo e sensuale.

Nel complesso un gran bel lavoro sebbene vi sia qualche difetto di produzione. Però la stoffa c'è e penso proprio che i nostri faranno strada ! Se amate il pure gothic metal questo cd è senz'altro un gran bel lavoro.....non sarà facile reperirlo .....Buona ricerca!!!!

A very good dèbut for this band from Finland that looks for a good future after an underground difficult past. A pure gothic metal cd that will be enjoied from all those who like bands like Amorphis and Sentenced.

If you think that this band plays a melodic metal like Him...here there's nothing similar to them! These 9 tracks have a very good sound and note a good technique of all musicians. A well done work at Finnvox studios, but i can notice any small imperfections. There's nothing new in the sound of this band but i may say that this is a valid cd but unfortunately it has not a good diffusion! the band is under a contract with Sound Riot and i have to say that the only problem is to find this cd!!!!!

Who likes Sentenced, Amorphis, Katatonia will not be indifferent listening the first song "The world today" that got a very decaying atmosphere and sounds very familiar to last Katatonia's cd also as regarding Lass' vocals that gives the best of himself through this decaying song. The track no.2 is more Sentenced oriented and is a very involving song; Very good work for all guitars that are able to give a particular groove to the song!

Next song is "Gray Singer"..this is not equal to the other two tracks! Here i may note a particoular problem as regarding the voice recording that is not in evidence compared with the instrumental part. Track no.4 is "Squeeze" and i note the presence of Miika Partonene to the raw vocals; There are some techniqual errors in the raw vocals..but this kind of voice is perfect for this song that is very good played! The next song "Fire inside me" keep high the quality of the album although is not something very original.....Till now i may say that it is a very good cd but if you listen all the song may bore you......but when i'm thinkin' it ....i begin to listen to the next song invite me to eat my words!!!!!!! it is called "Absebt".......a very special song with  cadenced rhythmics and good atmospheric parts that give a very special sound to this song!

"Shape in the Shadows" is a very good experiment to create atmosphere and melody ..."Cast inside" is another very well done song from this band that puts in evidence a good techinique! The title-track is, at the end,  a very atmospheric song maked with a very sensual guitar arpeggio.

In conclusion i may say that this is a very good cd although the production is not at the top; but there are very good qualities  shown by all  musicians and i think this band will become famous! 

If you love pure gothic metal i suggest this cd..although it's not easy to find it!  So, have a good search!!!!!!
