Avada Kedavra, the killing curse

Fourth year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter and his mates. Fourth film adaptation. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are back, grown up , more mature but with the same distinctive personalities. Yet  the fourth chapter of Harry Potter's saga still remains nothing but a fairy tale. Anyway it turns seriously to be a dark tale. In few words  "this" Harry Potter movie is dark, with obscure elements and a kick ass photography. Nevertheless humorous lines and circumstances are not missed . I still think that  Harry Potter  series is  for teenies, a series well based on the novels by  J.K. Rowling which just easily puts together elements from every mythology and allegory. But it's also true that The Goblet of Fire chapter has a fascination of its own that deserves to be tasted by a more adult audience too, Metallers included.

The  very good direction by Mike Newell, the excellent photography, the unquestionable outstanding work of actors, the beautiful constant subtle passage from one element to another (fire, water, air, earth) and the always attractive sequence of the seasons passing by, the beautiful landscapes make of this film a nice  pleasure for almost 157 minutes. The Goblet of Fire makes the miracle to turn  this "Disney-like" fiction into a real spectacular narration with  a marked sinister color. Like  said before, we deal with Harry Potter and not with the Alien Quadrilogy neither  with a Fassbinder film, neither with Star Wars, so many of our readers could consider the whole Harry Potter imaginative as childish or weak . Nonetheless  give a try to the Goblet of Fire, with its awesome special effects, with its its gothic final touch!  It is quite useless to speak about a plot that everybody knows, so i would underline only certain details of the movie, and only the  impressions i got  from the press screening about those parts which are particularly awaited by the fans or can arise anyway curiosity in the "agnostics", who look at Harry Potter with skepticism.

Let's say immediately that Harry Potter's and his friends' sentimental side  (Hermione and Ron, Harry and Cho Chang (KATIE LEUNG) ) and  Hogwarts' Yule Ball are a point of a certain interest in the film strategy, but don't play, after all,  that important role.

 The Yule Ball involves grandeur, the fascination of old dances and a short gothic (or glam?) rock irruption, it lets also express  the shy  love affaires of the youngest  and  the feelings of the mature adult characters, but it is a break down in the whole story; of course the heart and romance accompany the protagonists and grow up with them; Harry and Co. would prefer a serene path  for their feelings, but  Evil and Darkness await implacable. Moreover  the presence of Victor Krum and Fleur Delacour, during the Triwizard Tournament, make relationships more complicated and jealous. In the meanwhile Evil and Darkness have hit merciless already in the beginning of the movie during the Quidditch World Cup. The Quidditch campsite is set on fire,  Evil's manifestation is a  mighty Dark Sign evoked by Lord Voldemort's followers, the Death Eaters. The smoky, foggy Skull/Ghoul, with a serpent in its mouth, which  appears in the sky and the fire of destruction in the camp spectacularly balance the joy and the great acclamations that celebrate this World Cup. This is the sign that Voldemort is near. Voldemort is the  highlight of this movie: at the end, Harry Potter will face his most dangerous challenge, he will face his arch enemy Lord Voldemort in person , finally in flesh  and blood,  in a kind of avada kedavra duel.  Avada Kedavra, the killing curse that Harry already survived. All this within the frame of the  Triwizard Tournament, which is the pillar of the movie.

Haunted by nightmares, after the threatening experience  at the Quidditch World Cup, Harry comes back to Hogwarts but it is really now that the heralded danger takes shape. Hogwarts will host the prestigious Triwizard Tournament. One champion is  selected from each of the three wizarding schools to compete. The three wizards are Viktor Krum (STANISLAV IANEVSKI) from Durmstrang,

Fleur Delacour (CLEMENCE POÉSY) from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory (ROBERT PATTINSON) from Hogwarts. But Harry, though he is still  not 17 years old,  must compete anyway in this  Triwizard Tournament., cause  the Goblet spits out one fourth  final name: "Harry Potter" indeed. Harry didn't put his name in the Goblet but the will of the Goblet is binding. Who put Harry's name in the Tournament wants him in terrible danger beyond the  already 3 difficult tests. But it's hard to believe this story, the suspicions against Harry  are too heavy: even Ron thinks that Harry has tricked the thing in order to  enter the hall of fame. In this way  the movie gets another important  theme of this chapter: jealousy, suspicion, diffidence  and finally  the value of a re-born friendship,  friendship and loyalty till death if necessary .

 The 3 tasks of the Tournament are vividly represented with  awesome effects: above all the outstanding "fight" with the dragon, then the lake and its water mermaids, finally  the obscure trap of the maze and the last  challenge: the direct confrontation with Lord Voldemort ( vol de mort in French?). The performance of Brendan Gleeson acting Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody,  the  insane new teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts, is brilliant;

 the unforgivable curses (Imperius, Cruciatus and the Killing) become unforgettable when explained by "Mad-Eye", as well as his "transfiguration" punishment; but concerning the character "Mad-eye" a final (almost mortal) surprise will be reserved. In the same way is brilliant enough the performance concerning Lord Voldemort with  its thin body, long fingers and  nails, reptilian nose: a vampire dark appearance.

A particular mention goes to the  eccentric journalist Rita Skeeter (MIRANDA RICHARDSON) and her gossip columns . Concerning  ethics she is the opposite than me, but damn, if i could have  a remote monitored, almost living pen like she has, i too would love magic!
