  “The Anthem” to every single fan

Currently, there are too many concerts. It’s the end of the year and one great event is following after the next one. It’s difficult to keep up the clear view, because Christmas is coming and you have to get presents and also manage other things either.

I was enthusiastic when I heard that Iced Earth plays a show at the Z-7. They are known for intensive and atmospheric shows. Their tenth record “Dystopia” was previously released and Stuart Block from the Canadian Progressive Metal Act Into Eternity became the new singer for Matt Barlow, who left the band.

It wouldn’t be easy, because Barlows escape still hurts many Iced Earth fans. I went to their only Swiss show in Pratteln, Swiss Canton of Basel-Country, and Switzerland. I wanted figure out how Stuart would get on with the Swiss audience.

The doors of the Z-7 opened on 7:00 PM and I was inside the venue. Nevertheless, White Wizzard should have opened on 7:30 PM. But they left the tour very early and that caused a delay.

The lights went out on 8:30 PM and Fury UK from Manchester, England entered the stage. They did a warm up show at the Rock City in Uster one day ago and now they could switch on the big stage. Their mix between Classic Metal and Hard Rock scored from the beginning. The catchy guitar tunes of lead singer Chris Appleton found its way in people’s minds and you couldn’t get enough by the drum solo of Martin McNee. Unfortunately, their show ended after 50 minutes.

A longer break followed. The Iced Earth roadies built up the scenery and hung up the huge band banner with the current record cover “Dystopia”.

Iced Earth was the next in line on 10:30 PM. The first song “Dystopia” sounded and the audience was enthusiastic. Meanwhile, more spectators stepped inside for the headliner show. For this reason, it became louder and wilder.

The focus was on the songs from the older records during the tracks “Dystopia”, “Dark City”, “The Anthem” and “Days of Rage” appeared on the set list. Jon Schaffer and his band mates convinced with popular songs like „The Hunter“, „Declaration Day“, „Dantes Inferno“ or „Damien“. Jon Schaffer and Stu block dedicated “The Anthem” to every single fan for their appreciation.

The band hymn “Iced Earth” finished the great performance and they got standing ovations. After that, singer and rhythm guitar player Jon Schaffer, singer Stuart Block, Guitar player Troy Seele, Bass Player Freddie Vidales and drummer Brent Smedley bowed down to the audience before they left the stage happily.

Stu Block did a great job. In my eyes, he proved that he can maintain on the same level like his predecessors Tim “Ripper” Owens and Matt Barlow and win over the audience. Hopefully he maintains as a member in Iced Earth for a long time.

Derzeit gibt es zu viele Konzerte. Es ist Ende Jahr und ein toller Event jagt den nächsten. Dabei die Übersicht zu bewahren ist schwer, weil auch bald Weihnachten vor der Tür steht und noch Geschenke besorgt und andere Dinge müssen auch noch erledigt werden.

Als ich davon hörte, dass Iced Earth für ein Konzert ins Z-7 kommen, war ich begeistert. Schliesslich sind sie bekannt für intensive und stimmungsvolle Auftritte. Vor kurzem wurde ihr zehntes Studioalbum „Dystopia“ veröffentlicht und im Kanadier Stuart Block von den kanadischen Progressive Metallern Into Eternity ein neuer Sänger für den kürzlich ausgestiegenen Matt Barlow gefunden.

Es würde nicht einfach werden, denn vielen Iced Earth Fans schmerzt der Ausstieg Barlows immer noch. Um herauszufinden wie Stuart beim Schweizer Publikum ankommen würde, ging ich an ihr einziges Schweizer Konzert in Pratteln, Kanton Baselland, Schweiz.

Pünktlich um 19 Uhr wurden die Türen des Z-7 geöffnet und ich fand mich im Club ein. Eigentlich hätten White Wizzard um 19:30 Uhr auftreten sollen. Da sie jedoch früh von der Tour abgesprungen waren, verzögerte sich das Ganze ein wenig.

Um 20:30 Uhr gingen die Lichter aus und Fury UK aus Manchester, England betraten die Bühne. Einen Tag zuvor spielten sie sich im Rock City in Uster warm und durften nun auf die grosse Bühne wechseln. Mit ihrer Mischung aus Classic Metal und Hard Rock konnten sie von Beginn weg punkten. Die catchigen Gitarrenriffs von Leadsänger Chris Appleton frässten sich in die Köpfe der Zuschauer und dank dem Schlagzeug-Solo von Martin McNee konnte man nicht genug bekommen. Leider war ihr Auftritt nach 50 Minuten schon zu Ende.

Danach folgte eine längere Pause. Die Iced Earth Bühnentechniker bauten die Kulissen auf und hängten das riesige Bandbanner mit dem Cover des aktuellen Longplayers „Dystopia“ im Hintergrund auf.

Um 22:30 Uhr waren Iced Earth an der Reihe. Mit „Dystopia“ vom aktuellen Album erklang der erste Song und das Publikum zeigte sich begeistert. Mittlerweile waren mehr Zuschauer in die Halle geströmt um den Headliner live zu sehen. Deshalb wurde es umso lauter und wilder.

Mehrheitlich wurden Songs von den älteren Alben zum Besten gegeben, während von Dystopia die Songs „Dystopia“, „Dark City“, „Anthem“ und „Days of Rage“ in der Setlist auftauchten. Mit den Gassenhauern wie „The Hunter“, „Declaration Day“, „Dantes Inferno“ oder „Damien“ überzeugten Jon Schaffer & Co. auf ganzer Linie. Und weil Ihre Fans ihnen am wichtigsten sind wurde „Anthem“ von Jon Schaffer und Stuart Block jedem anwesenden Iced Earth Fan gewidmet.

Mit der Bandhymne „Iced Earth“ rundeten sie den gelungenen Auftritt ab und wurden frenetisch abgefeiert. Danach hatten sich Sänger und Rhythmusgitarrist Jon Schaffer, Sänger Stuart Block, Gitarrist Troy Seele, Bassist Freddie Vidales und Schlagzeuger Brent Smedley vor dem Publikum verneigt bevor sie zufrieden die Bühne verliessen.

Stu Block hatte seinen Job mit Bravour gemeistert. In meinen Augen hat er bewiesen, dass er auf dem gleichen Level wie seine Vorgänger Tim „Ripper“ Owens und Matt Barlow agieren und das Publikum mitreissen kann. Hoffentlich bleibt er uns noch lange als Iced Earth Mitglied erhalten.
