organized by Gothic Dolls, Salvo Russo and Sandy Bollig for GryphonMetal.ch

Our fans are influenced a lot by the Visual Kei Style

First of all: Can you present the band to our readers?
Hello, we are GothicDolls, a Spanish Band with influences from Visual Kei / Metal, the members of the Group are: Kala on Vocals, Kazuki at Guitar, Kamui at Bass and Wakka on Keyboards

I have read the band biography and I noticed that you had a lot of problems to solve until now, but the band is still alive! Can you explain the bad times you’ve been through and how you found the strength to go on?
What has made us stay together and given us motivation also in hard times was our Friendship, as we have always supported each other and that was what always gave us the strength to move on, apart from our love for music and the pleasure of playing on stage.

Let’s talk about the music - Your music gets a particular definition: “Visual Kei”, a style imported from Japan - you come from Spain. Where does this passion for Japanese culture come from?
Since we had been very young, we had been passionate for the Japanese culture in general, but especially for its music. We have always been influenced by this music and it also has influenced a lot the style of our music.

Listening to the songs I notice an approach that reminds me of gothic rock music and the vocals are very original - Which are your influences?
We are really big fans of music in general – the originality of our members is created by a mixture of various kinds of music. We couldn’t say with certainty, if our influences come from Visual Kei, Gothic Rock or something else, but it seems to be a little bit of everything.

In my personal opinion you sound best during the slow and mid tempo songs - Do you agree?
Personally we agree with that statement, because as a group we consider ourselves to be pretty melancholic deep inside and Kala’s voice fits best to such Songs as for example: “Silent Letter” or “The Room”.

About the scream vocals: How do you elaborate them?
Those screams are really created natural, as we do not use any distortion or anything like that when playing live and they sound very pure on the albums, too, because there is only a little bit of distortion used.

What is the typical fan of your band like?
Are you also appreciated by metal fans, or only emo and gothic fans?
We have a big variety of fans, but above it all we have to say that at the moment the majority of our fans are influenced a lot by the Visual Kei Style, even more than Fans with Metal, Emo, Gothic or other Styles.

How important is the appearance in this style?
You could say that our appearance resembles the message we try to transmit with our music, but it is just a little nuance, as over all the music is the most important part.

Let’s talk about the label - Who is your producer? Is it difficult to find a valid label for new bands?
Although we have a small Indie Record Label, we are really the own Producers of our Records, as we are given the freedom to create our own sound.
Today it is quite difficult to find a Record Label, because the whole topic of Music is quite dead, because of piracy and no Record Company takes the risk to support a new Group. Especially not here in Spain, where a certain musical style is already established and it is hard to have success with new ideas.

Can you explain to our readers the usual method of composing your songs?
First Kazuki or Kala compose the music depending on how they feel in that moment, everyone individual, but later on they always sit together and work at the created songs of each other.
The lyrics are the last thing we do, as we adapt the feelings which the melody creates inside ourselves from the finished and even recorded music.

Is there a Finnish “love metal” influence to the compositions?
Of course there is a Finnish influence, as first of all, Kala is a big fan of groups like “Him”, “Negative”, “Entwine” and others and it is difficult to create a song without the typical keyboard parts, which are always used in this kind of music.

Your latest album is dated 2008. What are you up to now? Is there a date for a new album?
Actually we have some Singles already composed, anyway there is no date for a new Album yet, but surely at the end of the year we will prepare a new one.

Concerning concerts - Is there a scheduled imminent tour?
Right now we have no concerts prepared, because we are busy preparing new Singles and also trying to find someone to play the drums part in the band, as we are still looking for a drummer actually.

Last but not least a little Game:  It’s called “The Game of The Tower” - You’re on a very high tower and with you there are three bands - You have to push down two of them, saving the third one.
With you there are:

Malice Mizer     The Cure     Dir En Grey

Which one do you choose and why?
Depending on the members of the group, we’d either save Malice Mizer or Dir En Grey, because even if The Cure had marked a turning point in the gothic music, our influences are more based on bands like Malice Mizer or Dir En Grey. Therefore Kala and Wakka would choose Malice Mizer, whereas Kazuki and Kamui would save Dir En Grey.

Thanks for everything!
