Interesting but not compelling.

My first impressions of this album were relatively good. I kind of remember their first effort, I remember thinking that it was okay but nothing that was eye capturing. This album, based on first impressions, has a better and crunchier guitar sound than the previous album and there seems to be better vocal arrangements as well.

Some of the highlights of Nordly’s include, “Skogens Lengsel,” and “Wintertimes.” Those songs are as metal as they come. Fast blast beats from the drummer, fast guitar playing, and catchy lyrics. Most of the time when I was driving, I usually ended up not turning the track when either one of these songs came on. I liked, “New Horizon” as well, it seems like a good song to slow dance to with your significant other. “Konklie” is a decent track too, the problem I have with it is that it’s an 8-minute song. The song is great for the first 4 minutes or so, but then it got to be the same thing over and over again.

Which is my problem with the whole album itself. Honestly, the whole album; every song sounds about the same. The same, “We’re a Nordic band presenting you stuff from our homeland!” Which is fine but the problem is depth. Every song on here is pretty good but I feel that they weren’t challenging the listener with their music.

Overall I thought Nordlys had an interesting vibe. It had this mystical, Nordic, Viking-feel to it. I was interesting but not compelling. On the bright side though, they are getting better. I felt this was a significantly better album than it’s predecessor. It had better songs, better guitar sound, and better song composition. I feel that they are on the verge of something big, that they are going to come out with a song or an album that is just slamming. This is a band to watch.
