Moskow (Russia)-suburbs 4.10.2005:

A few minutes ago, the last rays of sunshine disappeared in the endless countryside between St.Petersburg (“The window to Europe”,Ru) and Moskow…I’m a little bit sad because it was a really amazing time with my travel companion at my 21st Paradise Lost-concert in St.Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland. I’m sitting since 7 hours in the train to Moskow and in about 1 hour I’ll arrive in “the most mighty city” on planet Earth…!!

However, Paradise Lost played Saturday the 1st October at Club Port in the centre of St.Petersburg,  close to the famous  “Isaak”-cathedral. About 7 pm,  I got my pass at the entry  and my companion’s ticket too.

The support band from St.Petersburg, ”Great Sorrow”, began to play soon and it was a good one! They really warmed up the crowd in the little venue beside. We went both backstage because Dmitry, the Russian organizer, and his friends were very nice to us! I had a  conversation backstage with PL bassplayer Steve Edmondson. He was really friendly and down to earth.  His bandmates Aaron, Jeff and the replacement guitarist were preparing themselves. I didn't see Nick Holmes in backstage in that moment. The guitarist who was replacing “the master”Greg Mackintosh told us that Mr. Mackintosh is recovering from his illness (Hopefully he’ll make a speedy recovery...!). I guess the concert was almost sold out with 798 Russians, my Irish companion and one Swiss guy, me! But Steve Edmondson told me that more than 2000 people attended the Moskow show the day before!!!

The Yorkshire-darklords started the show about 9.30pm with Don’t belong (What for a great refrain!!!!!!!!)… Nick Holmes was not having his best day unfortunately, because, at times his melancholic voice was too thin and breakable, nevertheless I liked his voice as always, but maybe not everyone this evening!

The people were quieter than in other European Cities. The substitute guitarist did his job very well, most the time. I just realize that I never heard songs like Erased, Say Just Words and Forever after so powerful. But the volume was almost too loud(maybe no limit in Russia?) Paradise Lost  played also some bonus songs: last but not least they  came back twice again (2 encores) and played after 1.5 hours Mouth from Believe in Nothing-album 2001 as last track.Thank you!

After the good performance from PL, i remained a little bit shocked  because in the club was aired fucking dance music and no Gothicmetal or stuff like that. It was the reason for some vodkas! And at the bar  I met Sascha and his beautiful Julia. Sascha is a real Russian Metalhead, he showed me how real and spontaneous Russian-friendship can be. The day after, I met him and his friends again. I’m sure, we’ll stay in touch because Metalhearts…This was a great encounter!

I really felt the Finnish romanticism in St.Petersburg, so it was for me a special trip to see “the most attractive view of sadness” live there!
