A fantastic record.

There’s just something about Daniel Botti’s metal voice that makes me want to listen to everything he ever puts out. I’m not saying that because once upon a time I once met him and hung out with him in Switzerland but when I compare his work to others I can say that it can honestly compete with the best of them. I bring him up initially because I’ve followed his short career from when he was in Node with fellow drummer Marco DiSalvia and I was hoping that he’d get back into music after finishing up all of his schooling and I am happy he did. It’s not very often you here about a metaller with a doctorate in political science!

One of the first things I noticed about the album, aside from the cool album art, was the way the album was mixed. It sounded so very polished and something Andy Sneap would put his tamp on. Clicky-booming kick drums sharp and brutal guitars, and bass so low it could be felt with like a drill, just digging deep into one’s psyche. The whole album was mixed quite beautifully, I wouldn’t change  a thing.

The guitar solos on every song are very meticulously performed and sound excellent in every track. “Wish Em’ Well” is my favorite song on the cd and the solo on this track, I feel is quite memorable but what’s more memorable is the drumming in the beginning. It’s intense! The chorus is catchy too, many times I utter to my self, “I wish em’ well.”Although, it’s not what the song is about, I feel like it’s about getting older and hoping your old friends are doing well and wishing them well in the nostalgic sense. It’s the type of song where, someone could take it, and make up their own interpretation of the lyrics. That’s mark of a great song, despite the crushing guitars, insane drumming, the way the song is sung in such a way that it forces the listener to use their imagination and that is very hard to do.

The other song that really stood out to me was the title track, “Western Hypnosis.” It hits the listener in the face like a sledgehammer. It’s everything a metal band should sound like, technical, brutal all while trying to sound intelligible and clear. The guitar and drums operate in such epic precision, all musicians from all genres should respect this clinical display.

“Black Loyalty” is a different type of song where it’s brutal but has a lot of cool melody to it especially in the chorus. Another great track worth listening to. Catchy chorus, great solos, great drumming and everything you’d expect from a great melodic metal song.

            In Conclusion:

I’ve listened to over twenty times now, driving with it cranked as I am rolling through downtown Minneapolis with lightning fast kick drums and screaming guitars thundering out my car windows. It means, it’s a fantastic record that everyone should go and buy immediately and I can’t wait for whatever else they can come up with.
