PROBOT : "Probot"                 probot           Southern Lord

review  by Dimitris "Heartcollector83" Theodoropoulos____

Here’s a release that’s been on the works for about four years. The mastermind behind this album is Dave Grohl who has played drums for Foo Fighters. Many of you metalheads out there might think why should they pay attention to such a release, but allow me to introduce you to the guests of this album and you’ll change your mind at once. Eleven artists guest on this cd among which Cronos (Venom), Max Cavalera (ex-Sepultura,Soulfly), Lemmy (Motorhead), Tom Warrior (Celtic Frost), King Diamond and other important people. Each song has been written in the style of the guest artists’ band. You must listen to the album’s hit song ‘Shake Your Blood’ with Lemmy on vocals and bass, and you won’t be able to tell the difference from a real Motörhead song. There’s also a cool video clip for this song shown on MTV every now and then.

The opening track is called ‘Centuries Of Sin’ and features Cronos from Venom. Good opener, solid song. Second song is with Max Cavalera titled ‘Red War’ and is a very powerful composition in the style of Soulfly. The album continues with the song I talked about a few lines above, ’Shake Your Blood’ with Lemmy and this song rules.

Access Babylon’ featuring Mike Dean of C.O.C. is a fast tune in the vein of C.O.C. . Kurt Brecht from D.R.I. guests on ‘Silent Spring’, a very good song, probably one of the best of the album.

Ice Cold Man’ is a doom song written for Lee Dorian of Cathedral (and ex-Napalm Death), a great song, slow, with dramatic melodies and good riffs. I really enjoyed this one.

Wino from Obsessed is the guest for ‘The Emerald Law’. Once again I must say how much the songs resemble the bands of their artists they feature. The Emerald Law sounds a lot like an Obsessed song and a pretty good one.

Tom G. Warrior is the next guest on the list for the incredible ‘Big Sky’. Don’t expect the trademark screams of Tom here but his signature voice is more than present.

Dictatosaurus’ features Snake from Voivod. Killer track with an excellent chorus and another great song for the album.

Trouble’s Eric Wagner sings on ‘My Tortured’. His voice always had something very authentic and his contribution makes this song another good addition to the cd.

The song that closes the album is sung by King Diamond, what better way to close such a good effort.’ Sweet Dreams’ is written exactly  for King’s standards. It sounds without a doubt like a Diamond song and the haunting feeling is always there. After this song the cd had some minutes with no sound and then something like a hidden track started playing. I have no idea at all what’s happening on this song or who sings but it’s a brilliant tune!

Dave Grohl has made a difficult experiment and he has succeeded. With such guests how could he fail but the songs by themselves are great and Probot is a well worked album. I always enjoy listening to this album, surely something different and unique among the hundreds of releases nowadays.
