And so a new saga began. This is the album that started it all

And so a new saga in the Death metal scene began. Atheist were meant to be the pioneers of a sound that was never heard before in extreme music and Piece of Time is their groundbreaking debut album. With this album they introduced us to what was about to come with their next releases. "Piece of Time" is the most thrashy of all  3 Atheist albums and the songs here are still diverse and full of tempo and time changes, intense drum and bass parts and really crazy but amazing guitar riffs. In their later releases, the band would expand on a more experimental and less repetitive style but still this Thrash metal that Atheist are playing on "Piece of Time" could hardly be compared to the other Thrash bands. Bands like Coroner could belong in the Atheist category but Coroner were not as chaotic and technical as Atheist were, Coroner had a bit of a different approach to technical Thrash metal or Prog/Thrash(!). Another band that played in the same style with Atheist was Cynic, another highly underrated band which released just one album entitled "Focus" and is also highly recommended. Atheist in their future albums took the whole sound to a new level and left much of their classic thrash influences on the side. The bass playing in this cd by the extraordinary Roger Patterson (RIP) is mind blowing and it’s a really sad thing that he dies so early in a car accident during the promotion tour of this album. This man could easily be in the same level, if he still lived, with the likes of Steve DiGiorgio and Billy Sheenan.

AtheistA few comments about the songs featured on "Piece of Time"… I would pick as the top ones the self titled track which opens the album, On They Slay, Life, No Truth and of course on top of all I Deny. It seems that out of the 9 tracks of the album, while trying to pick the best ones only I picked half of them but I couldn’t leave easily a song out of the list! So, there you have the best 5 songs from the 9 masterpieces this album holds.

This re-release has some really interesting bonus tracks such as the "Hell Hath No Mercy Demo" and the "On They Slay Demo" which features unreleased tracks.

This is the album that started it all;  but the best was yet to come!
