Dalia : Do you like pain?
Peter : .. If i like Pain? The group Pain?....
Dalia : No.....
Peter : ... oh! if i like pain,... yeah, sometimes i do, yeah.
Dalia :I mean physical pain or pain in the feelings..
Peter :Well, my whole life is bad, you know even when its good, you know, you just do it the
opposite for some reason .... sometimes...,sometimes you need cares to create stuff.
I dont know,... if life is good i dont think that you are too inspired to
making music, to express yourself and something like that.
Dalia : Which are your impressions about this tour together with In Flames and Soilwork,
who are coming also from Sweden?
Peter : I think, it's a very strong bill and thats why we pull about 1200 people every night, you know, ... i dont know, but maybe not tonight, but we pull a lot of people, its a good combination.
Dalia : Speaking about general music sound, do you prefer metal angry guitars, or more electronics?
Peter : No. It's really angry guitar for me, you know, when i
really want to get crazy and destroy a room.., but when i'm in the mood i like electronic stuff also, but its not to getting crazy, it's just to get pissed off or just enjoying life.
Dalia : lets speak a little bit about Nothing Remains The Same, your last album as Pain.
To tell the truth, i have some perplexities about that album, because it
seems to me like a mix of many influences, for example , there is a song ,
"Injected Paradise", that sounds to me a little bit like Paradise Lost oriented.....
Peter : OH NO! Not that!!....
(everybody is laughing)
Peter : .... if you would say Depeche Mode i would be happy....
Dalia : .. but there are also angrier songs on this album...
Peter : ..yeah, there are alot of different styles, because i
want to try to do different things, you know, i wanted to make a wide album.... a little bit of this, a little bit of that, coz you never can be original, so ,i guess, everything you listen to influence you in the music, same with Hypocrisy, the stuff i listen to, i think, influence me every time and every album, you know, it depends which day you catch me writing a song, so its all about moods
Dalia : ... so, it depends just on moods...
Peter :Yeah, same with Hypocrisy, but Hypocrisy should stay brutal, Pain for me is like exploring the production sides, to become a better producer, i think i can handle Death Metal and Black Metal pretty good, and now i want to explore
other sides also, and with Pain i can put in stuff like Immortal or Marduk whatever, i learn so much from doing the opposite thing and when you get back to the brutal, you are so hungry and you want to make it
really good.
Dalia : You have already immagined my next question, that was indeed that i
personally don't understand so much, that you, coming from Hypocrisy can turn to Pain...
Peter : .... yeah, its not very easy.....
Dalia : .... you are so talented to experiment other stuff aswell?...
Peter : Yeah, but you dont have to worry about what other people think about what you do, because if you worry about you have already lost. You have to go always with your heart and if you
feel right you do it and if you dont , you dont do it. So, not getting forced by anything, ... if you follow your heart you are
the most honest person in your life.
Dalia : i really like for example the song "Breathing In Breathing Out"
from the album Rebound , if compared to that one Nothing Remains The Same is a little bit
weak...
Peter :Not week, its softer!, on both sides, the production side and the song
itself, because the other album i think, was too much the same all the time, this one is like you can breath between and then its heavy and then you can breath again. The other one was
constantly sound all the way . Plus i really love the songs i have on this album and i think the production i have done was the best i did in my whole life.
Dalia : In your new album there is also a cover of a Beatles song, and it is
really great and i think that Eleanor Rigby is born again.
Peter : You know, i grew up with the Beatles because of my Mom and Dad, and i always thought that Eleanor
Rigby was fascinating, different from everything they ever did, so depressive and i had a
really big vision of how i can do it in Pain stuff and it fitted perfectly in my head,
plus i had the possibility to go to a huge studio and put up a big orchestra, what i've never done before, and its cool to do things you've never done before, but i always thought about.
Dalia : Musically speaking, Stefan was saying to me, if Beatles
would compose their music today, they would probably propose this song like you did. What do you think?
Peter : I dont know, these guys are genius!
Dalia : At their time they break some border..
Peter : .... oh yeah! They did, and i think this song is the first
othic, like really Dark Gothic...
Dalia : Thats why Stefan think, that if Beatles were young guys today they would make this song like
you did
Peter : yeah, time changes, and they always broke the border with every album... Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and everybody were like "ah, how we can do better like them" because every time
Beatles came out with a new album they were always the top, and noone can even get close to them
Dalia : The video Shut Your Mouth shows you together with an alien creature. Do you believe in alien activity or not?
Peter :I do, i mean, i was getting into in the 90' with Hypocrisy, but then i put it by the side because i thought "ah , nothing is happen" and so, and i start singing about reality and stuff like that, and when we did the Pain video, the director came and
said, " i have this cool idea" and i read the script and i started laughing and the director didnt know why, he
had not a clue at all. So the idea was his, it wasnt my idea.
Dalia : But you liked that idea....
Peter :Yeah, bacause it was funny, because there is some humor in it, its like: take
life as it is.
Dalia : But do you believe that there is some other life form in the
universe?
Peter : I think that there is life somewhere else, i dont know if they can time travel or whatever, but i
definitely think that there is life somewhere else. My theory about is
that they came travelling through the space , seen the earth and said
:"here we can put some life on!", and so they planted in DNA and stuff like that, and then they
kept on going to the next solar system.... thats my theory. ... And then, from time to time, they come
around to check us.
Dalia : Did you ever read a book from Van Daeniken or some other
writers, about this stuff?
Peter : Yeah! I've read a book from Whitley Strieber,
he has written a book called "Communion: a true story" , and
they visit him all the time and he cant never sleep and they wont leave
him alone, its wako. .... it is cool to think about other things than the normal day, it's cool to have something to focus on besides music, as music is my life, but as i've
said i didnt heard lately any new stuff about something happened, it's just a rerun all the time. When i hear something crazy i get in there.
Dalia : I like to know some impressions about the Abyss studios and about
Joachim Lütke that should have some cool focus for you
Peter :yeah, he is a cool guy... with Abyss i do only one band a year, because first of all i dont have time, .. ok, if there is
coming something interesting along maybe i will do it but definitely take care about my
"babies like" Immortal and Marduk, you know, and that is going so busy for me, because i have to write the
Pain album, a new Hypocrisy album, and then we go on tour with both bands, every year is so busy. I dont want to keep it like a drive through thing, its not a fast food thing, i want
really concentrate on what i do. At the end, before i decided to take it easy, i lost my mind, it was just like bands came in, bands go out, you know, i lost what i wanted to do, and also it was just money and people used my name for
commercial and shit like that And at the end i've said "fuck it!, i dont want do this anymore", because my only reason why i started producing was to learn and have fun, and i'm so happy with all the good bands im recording in my studio, and i have a lot of bands in my back and thats very good....
Dalia : .... congratulations, you have produced more than 100 albums.....
Peter : .. its also, if the bands werent so good , the shit wouldnt be good
Dalia : What is fascinating you the most: sex or death?
Peter : Sex! (laughing)
Dalia : ..and now our last typical question, the game of the Tower. there is a very high tower and on this tower there are usually three bands, but for you, i put on
th etop of this tower three sins, you have to push down two of them, saving only one.
For you on this tower is : Lust, Pride and Lazyness, which one do you save?
Peter : Lust, because: lust in sex, lust in making music! and so on
Dalia : Thanks a lot for your time you spent for Gryphonmetal!
Peter : Thanks to you
