  Money for a new pet shelter.

Metal For Free is an event, which was hosted by DeadlineBooking Switzerland. At the moment, the animal protection of both Basel (TbS) needs money for a new pet shelter. For this reason it was decided to collect money on a show with For Dawn, Coilcry and Silent Circus for the purpose of a donation.

There was free entry and personally I think it’s a good thing. For this reason I visited the Rockbar. And finally such events are rare, because it’s associated with the current global economic crisis.

I was in front of the location on 7:00 PM and could watch the sound check. Actually, For Dawn should’ve started on 8:00 PM but they were on stage 30 minutes later. They did a show at this year’s Metalfest with acts like W.A.S.P and Behemoth a short time ago.

Their mixture of Hardcore and Metalcore was well received by the crowd. The applause was awesome. Singer Daniel Al-Hasani reminded optically a little bit of “The Dude” from the movie “The Big Lebowski” and convinced with a first class vocal number. Another asset was the sound engine, because their songs never sounded as powerful as tonight. “Blood Honour Destiny” was introduced as a new track on the end of their great show.

I was looking forward to Coilcry. The band got a new bass player called Reto Hartmann (after his predecessor Dominique Anceschi left the band) and the last year was used for writin’ new songs and learnin’ them for the production of the record. Well, the Basel guys are back with new energy and the crowd got to know that soon. A lot of new songs were introduced after the obligate “Papa Loves Mambo” intro by Perry Como. These tracks helped singer Alex Büche, guitar player Sandro Gysin, guitar player Joachim Lötscher, bass player Reto Hartmann und drummer David Horstmann makin’ the crowd goin’ nutz and gained standing ovations.

Coilcry Fan Hans Bierbaum felt this vibe in such an intensive way, that he decided to do a funny strip session, which caused much laughter. Even a circle pit was achieved, the first one after eight years at a Coilcry show. Singer Alex Büche announced that their second record gets recorded in Hamburg, Germany. For this reason they’ll spend three weeks over there. “Strength Beyond Fear” became the last track and Coilcry said goodbye from the crazy crowd. Honestly, you must admit that these guys are stronger than ever!

Silent Circus went on stage as headliner at a late hour. The Modern Metal act is very hot right now and released a strong debut. I never heard of ‘em and felt very skeptical. But my worries were uncalled for, because they handled it like professional musicians. Their music reminded of Atreyu and Killswitch Engage and it wasn’t only guitar tunes of Sascha Maksymov and Marco Puglisi but also Peter Haller’s vocals, who reminded of Atreyu singer Alex Varkatzas.

They left the stage after the regular show time. However, they had to get back on stage again and put down the gas pedal one more time after encore shouts. That happened with “The End of Heartache” a Hit single by American Metalcore band Killswitch Engage. Then it was over and Silent Circus could enthrall me. You gotta keep an eye on this band!

Geld für ein neues Tierheim.

Metal For Free ist eine Veranstaltung, welche von DeadlineBookingSwitzerland ins Leben gerufen wurde. Derzeit benötigt der Tierschutz beider Basel (TbS) Geld für ein neues Tierheim und aus diesem Grund entschied man sich ein Konzert mit den Bands For Dawn, Coilcry und Silent Circus zu starten, damit man Geld sammeln und es dem Tierschutz beider Basel spenden konnte-

Weil der Eintritt frei war und das in meinen Augen eine gute Sache ist, stattete ich der Rockbar einen Besuch ab. Schliesslich sind solche Veranstaltungen rar gesät was auch mit der aktuellen Wirtschaftskrise zusammenhängt.

Um 19 Uhr fand ich mich in der Location ein und durfte beim Soundcheck beiwohnen. Eigentlich hätten For Dawn um 20 Uhr die Veranstaltung eröffnen sollen. 30 Minuten später standen die Müllheimer auf der Bühne. Vor kurzem spielten sie beim diesjährigen Metalfest in Pratteln mit illustren Acts wie W.A.S.P und Behemoth.

Ihre Mischung aus Hardcore und Metalcore kam beim Publikum gut an. Der Applaus fiel dementsprechend stark aus. Sänger Daniel Al-Hasani erinnerte optisch an „The Dude“ aus dem Film „The Big Lebowski“ und glänzte mit einer tollen Gesangsperformance. Was den Jungs auch zu Gute kam war die Sound-Anlager, denn ihre Songs klangen noch nie so stark wie heute. Zum Abschluss wurde mit „Blood Honour Destiny“ ein brandneuer Song vorgestellt. Damit endete der gute Auftritt.

Auf Coilcry war ich sehr gespannt. Nachdem die Band mit Reto Hartmann einen neuen Bassisten an Land gezogen hatte (Vorgänger Dominique Anceschi hatte die Band verlassen A.d.R), wurde das vergangene Jahr dazu genutzt neue Songs zu schreiben und einzuüben für die Albumproduktion. Nun sind die Basler mit frischem Elan zurück und das bekam das Publikum auch zu spüren. Nach dem obligaten Perry Como Intro „Papa Loves Mambo“ wurden zahlreiche neue Songs vorgestellt, wobei mit „My Girlfriend is a Jesus Freak“ noch ein alter Gassenhauer dabei war. Mit denen brachten Sänger Alex Büche, Gitarrist Sandro Gysin, Gitarrist Joachim Lötscher, Bassist Reto Hartmann und Schlagzeuger David Horstmann die Zuschauer zum durchdrehen und ernteten zahlreichen Applaus.

Angesteckt von dieser Euphorie liess sich der Coilcry Fan Hans Bierbaum auf eine lustige Strip-Session ein, was zahlreiches Gelächter zur Folge hatte. Auch ein Circle Pit kam zustande, der erste seit acht Jahren bei einer Coilcry Show. Sänger Alex Büche kündigte ausserdem an, dass sie im Oktober für drei Wochen nach Hamburg gehen, um ihr zweites Album aufzunehmen. „Strength Beyond Fear“ war der letzte Song und Coilcry verabschiedeten sich vom tollen Publikum. Ehrlich gesagt muss man den Jungs attestieren, dass sie derzeit stärker denn je sind.

Zu später Stunde stieg Silent Circus als Headliner auf die Bühne. Die Modern Metaller sind derzeit schwer angesagt und veröffentlichten ein starkes Debütalbum. Da ich noch nie von ihnen gehört hatte, war ich natürlich skeptisch. Aber die Sorge war unbegründet, denn sie gingen professionell an die Sache ran. Ihre Musik erinnerte an Atreyu und Killswitch Engage was nicht nur an den Gitarrenriffs von Sascha Maksymov und Marco Puglisi sondern auch am Gesang von Peter Haller, der an Atreyu Frontmann Alex Varkatzas erinnerte.

Nach dem regulären Set verliessen sie die Bühne. Jedoch mussten sie wegen den Zugabe Rufen nochmals Gas geben. Das taten sie mit „The End of Heartache“, dem Hit von der amerikanischen Metalcoretruppe Killswitch Engage. Danach war Schluss und mit dem super Auftritt konnte Silent Circus mich begeistern. Diese Band muss man im Auge behalten!
