Success hasn’t spoiled them.

In the last months, you could see that musicians from the 80’s get together for super groups, because they want launch a comeback. The quality is dependable from each group and isn’t always great, but no one likes to admit that fact. The euphoria prevails.

Well, the trio with singer Paul Shortino (Ex-Rough Cutt, Ex-Quiet Riot), drummer Carmine Appice (Ex-King Kobra, Ex-Vanilla Fudge,) and Spanish Blues Guitar virtuoso Javier Vargas prove the opposite. They got standing ovations and praise on their previous shows.

There was one show in Pratteln and I visited that show in order to figure out whether the praise is justified. In fact, they should’ve played at Z7, but the pre-sale didn’t run well and the show was relocated to Galery Music Bar.

The guys Shortino, Appice and Vargas entered the stage on 9:05 PM and showed a passionate joy in performing right from the start. Paul used every single opportunity to get in touch with the audience. Guitar player Javier Vargas convinced with catchy guitar tunes.

Shortino performed the Acapella track “Heaven and Hell” in the middle of the set and I had goose bumps. Even Carmine Appice could set the mood with a drum solo and underlined his whole range of skills.

Cover versions of Hits from acts like Vanilla Fudge, AC/DC, Janis Joplin and many more were played during 90 minutes before the Quiet Riot “Metal Health” track launched the end. But the 50 spectators asked for an encore and for this reason “Right On” followed.

After the show Shortino, Vargas and Appice signed autographs, you could take photographs together with them and shakin’ hands was allowed either. That’s a nice gesture of these down to earth musicians, who proved that the success hasn’t spoiled them.

Während den letzten paar Monaten konnte man beobachten, dass sich Musiker aus den 80er zu Supergruppen vereinen um ein Comeback zu starten. Dass dabei je nach Gruppe die Qualität auf der Strecke bleibt, gibt niemand gerne zu. Denn die Euphorie darüber überwiegt.

Das es aber auch anders geht, beweist das Gespann um Sänger Paul Shortino (Ex-Rough Cutt, Ex-Quiet Riot), Schlagzeuger Carmine Appice (Ex-King Kobra, Ex-Vanilla Fudge,), und den spanischen Bluesgitarrenvirtuosen Javier Vargas, die auf den bisherigen Konzerten viel Applaus und Lob einheimsen konnten.

Als ein einziges Konzert in Pratteln anstand, ging ich dahin um zu sehen ob die Lorbeeren gerechtfertigt wären. Eigentlich hätten sie im Z-7 auftreten sollen, aber wegen dem schlechten Vorverkauf verlegte man das Konzert kurzerhand in die Galery Music Bar.

Um 21:05 Uhr betraten die Herren Shortino, Appice und Vargas die Bühne und legten von Beginn weg eine leidenschaftliche Spielfreude an den Tag. Bei jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit trat Paul mit dem Publikum in Kontakt. Gitarrist Javier Vargas überzeugte mit eingängigen Melodien, die er seiner Gitarre entlockte.

In der Mitte des Sets gab Shortino dann die Acappela Nummer „Heaven and Hell“ zum Besten bei der ich Gänsehaut hatte. Auch Carmine Appice konnte mit einem Schlagzeug Solo für Begeisterung sorgen und unterstrich dadurch sein ganzes Können als Trommelwirbler.

Während 90 Minuten wurden Covers von Hits von Vanilla Fudge, AC/DC, Janis Joplin usw. gespielt ehe mit „Metal Health“ von Quiet Riot das Ende eingeläutet wurde. Aber die 50 Zuschauer forderten eine Zugabe und die kam in der Form von „Right On“ zum Zug.

Nach dem Konzert vergaben Shortino, Appice und Vargas fleissig Autogramme, gemeinsame Fotosessions mit den Bandmitgliedern wurden gewährt und auch Hände schütteln war erlaubt. Das ist eine tolle Geste von diesen gestandenen Musikern, die trotz ihres Erfolges auf dem Boden geblieben und nicht abgehoben sind.
