 Fans of this kind of metal will like it very much.

Being born from the ashes of the more known Windir, after the death of the leader of this, Valfar, Vreid reaches its third full length called "I Krig". It’s a pity  not to have  the translation of the lyrics of this album, because it deals with a concept based on a poem of a certain Gunnar Reiss-Andersen dated 1946, concerning the Norwegian resistance during the II World war. 

The opener, at its very beginning,  is comitted  to an harped, enough suggestive intro that  flows into a mid tempo coloured by an epic and "warlike" proceeding (as the concept and the type of music requires). The production is enough clean, perhaps too much. Singing is in Norwegian and the style of the vocalist Sture  is not among the preferred ones of mine,  to be sincere. It deals in fact with a  heavy yet not much incisive screaming. These vocals are framed up among the notes without adding  much more to what the instruments already express. The track ends without remarkable rising, maintaining the listener’s attention low, whereas, at this point,  listeners would also wait for some burst and acceleration. 

We pass to the second track called "Under Isen". Unlike its antecedent, this second track pushes a bit further, beginning with a guitar ride which is not bad at all, even if perhaps it’s a bit too  melodic. The chorus is committed to parts of clean vocals that give a very epic touch to the whole.  

And we are to the title track: the longest track of the cd, it lasts in fact almost 9 minutes. Its introduction is entrusted to unusual instruments like the violin in order to go on with a very slow pace where the good work of the bass stands out. Then, a very good riff, that can be labelled as Black Metal, starts unexpectedly and drums constantly accelerate till getting to lightly touch  Thrash metal beats. A really well made song where the very good work of songwriting and the good preparation of the musicians stand out. An “intermezzo”devolved upon bass, drums and violin  maintains the attention alive making this track very intriguing. "I Krig" conquers for itself the “title” of best song of the album. 

Unfortunately, during the remaining tracks some boredom is leaving its effect because of solutions that are maybe too predictable and repetitive, with the exception  of the song number 6 ("Dei Daudes Steig Av Grav) in whose riffing we still find  some influence from the beloved Thrash Metal.  

The aim of the band to create an original and not very  derivative sound is evident, also through inserting parts of clean vocals and acoustic intervals that succeed in setting well the general mood of the disk. Besides, I also realize  the difficulty that can be crossed when one tries to build a sound based on extreme metal with influences of folk and epic, with melodies and not very  usual instruments. I have never been a great fan of this kind of sonority therefore my judgment absolutely has to keep in mind this variable.  

In conclusion, I don't feel to vote this album down “a priori”, because I am sure that fans of this kind of metal will like it very much. The disc is well played and produced. All musicians that play in the project are very valid ones and the will to escape certain “canon laws”, but without falling to a low point by resulting "forcedly original",  can be heard.

A disk that will surely do the joy of the fans of the band, of  Windir's fans and of the part of extreme metal fans that love music with epic/folk/melodic influences inside.

Nati dalle ceneri dei più noti Windir dopo la morte del leader di quest’ultimi, Valfar, i Vreid arrivano al loro terzo full – length dal titolo “I Krig”. E’ un peccato non avere la traduzione dei testi di quest’album, in quanto si tratta di un concept basato su un poema di un certo Gunnar Reiss-Andersen del 1946 riguardante la resistenza Norvegese durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

L’opener è affidata inizialmente ad un’intro abbastanza suggestiva arpeggiata sfociante in seguito in un mid tempo dall’andatura epica e “guerresca” (come il concept e il tipo di musica richiede). La produzione è abbastanza pulita, forse troppo. Il cantato è in norvegese e lo stile del singer Sture non è dei miei preferiti, ad essere sincero. Si tratta infatti di uno screaming poco incisivo e pesante. Si incastra tra le note non riuscendo ad aggiungere molto a ciò che è espresso dagli strumenti. Il pezzo si conclude senza elevarsi troppo mantenendo un po’ bassa l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore che magari si aspetterebbe anche qualche sfuriata ed accelerazione.

Passiamo alla seconda traccia dal titolo “Under Isen”. A differenza della sua antecedente qui si spinge un po’ di più iniziando con una cavalcata di chitarra niente male anche se forse un pochino troppo melodica. Il chorus è affidato a parti di voce pulita che danno un tocco molto epico al tutto.

E siamo alla title track. La traccia più lunga del cd, siamo infatti sui quasi 9 minuti. L’introduzione è affidata a strumenti inusuali come il violino per proseguire con un’andatura molto lenta dove spicca il buon lavoro del basso. Inaspettatamente parte un ottimo riff etichettabile come Black Metal e la batteria accelera costantemente per poi arrivare a sfiorare qualche tempo thrash metal. Un pezzo veramente ben costruito dove spiccano l’ottimo lavoro di songwriting e la buona preparazione dei musicisti. Un intermezzo affidato a basso, batteria e violino mantiene viva l’attenzione rendendo il pezzo molto intrigante. “I Krig” si conquista il titolo di miglior brano del cd.

Purtroppo con le restanti tracce si fa sentire un po’ di noia con soluzioni forse troppo scontate e ripetitive ad esclusione della numero 6 (“Dei Daude Steig Av Grav) dove ritroviamo ancora qualche influenza nel riffing del caro Thrash Metal.

Si nota la voglia della band di creare un sound originale e poco derivativo inserendo anche parti cantate pulite e intermezzi acustici che riescono a incastonarsi bene nel mood generale del disco. Mi rendo anche conto della difficoltà che ci può essere quando si cerca di costruire un sound basato sul metal estremo con influenze di folk e epic e con melodie e strumenti poco usuali.

Tra l’altro, non sono mai stato un grande fan di questo genere di sonorità quindi il mio giudizio deve assolutamente tenere conto di questa variabile.

In definitiva, non mi sento di bocciare a priori questo disco anche perché sono certo che ai fan di questo genere di metal piacerà tantissimo. E’ un disco ben suonato e ben prodotto. I musicisti impegnati nel progetto sono tutti molto validi e la voglia di uscire da certi canoni si fa sentire senza cadere mai in basso risultando “forzatamente originali”.

Un disco che farà sicuramente la gioia dei fan della band, dei fan dei Windir e di tutto il filone di metal estremo con al suo interno influenze epic/folk/melodiche.
