Tobi Diepelt is the singer of Got Nuthin’ from Berlin, Germany and he is also behind the mic in Denny Crane. Their performance at “Surviving Eastern Fest” was amazin’ and doin’ an interview was a matter of course.

An interestin’ interview about Hardcore as Music and Lifestyle, the current situation of strugglin’ clubs in Berlin, Germany and much more was achieved.

Hardcore means connection.

  Dear Tobi, it’s a pleasure for me havin’ this interview with you.

1.   Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a Berlin guy and Denny Crane & Got Nuthin’ get the lyrics and vocals!

2.   Got Nuthin’ was founded in 2012. You and your band mates are involved in the other bands Tonedown, Denny Crane and All For Revenge. Why did you found Got Nuthin’?

We all love old school hardcore like it used to be back in the days! Raybeez stated once: “start a band make a difference take a stand”. That’s what it is! GN developed an own dynamic very fast and it became more serious. We noticed that when we had our first show ever. That was in Switzerland (Basel). I mean who’s a so crazy drivin’ 1’000 kilometres with a project which exists about two months? After that we looked at each other and knew “Yeah! That was off the hook, let’s do that shit!”

      The band name Got Nuthin’ has different meanings in English language depending on the context. Why did you choose this name?

I think it underlines our band connection to the music, which we play. Nowadays, you get measured in material things and bank account status. We don’t give a fuck about it and prefer playin’ music. For us, it’s one of the most important things in life. The joy of music! And if society thinks that is “nothing” then we just got “nothin”.

       You’re from Berlin City and there is a huge music scene of all genres. Recently, I read about an article on the World Wide Web about strugglin’ clubs, which might shut down for apartments. How’s the status of the alternative Music scene concerning this scenario?

The alternative scene has been driven out the downtown area like the middle- and lower class. Meanwhile, entire districts are kind of party miles for the new rich. Alternative art and music is only good enough for marketing but then it’s only about money not about culture. Berlin has become a fast livin’ city. Many things change. We really regret it and sometimes we’re really mad, because no one has the nack of livin’ in a New Manhattan! I recommend you the track “Lost in Berlin” by Denny Crane if you want gets to know how we feel.

            Recently, the GEMA (English: Society for musical performing and mechanical reproduction rights) announced an increase of charges. In statistical terms approximately 600 Percent for the live music sector. That means many clubs might shut down, because they have to pay more to this institution. For this reason, there was a loud protest campaign at their division in Berlin. What can you tell us from your point of view about the current situation?

It would be the economic ruin but a cultural for the city, because most clubs don’t have the money. I think its right to protest! But like I said: it’s all about the money not about culture! Unfortunately! I hope that both sides may agree on a fair way but everythin’ else makes no sense.

6.    Meanwhile, there are different Hardcore scenes like Old School, New School and Beatdown Hardcore either. What means “Hardcore” for you?

Hardcore is much more than music. It’s a valve. It’s a way to face life. It means connection. It means expression.

7        Which musicians influenced you personally?

I have been listening to so much music, different genres, and different artists. My first HC records were “DMS” by Madball and “Ground Zero” by Ryker’s! That was with 14, 15. I think the life with its all ups and downs influenced me the most.

           You announced Facebook about a deal with District 763 Records on Facebook a few days ago. How did get this deal?

District is the Record label, where Tonedown is in the rooster and we all produced with our three other bands at Kugelphone Studio. That’s how it goes in a circle of friends. We’re glad that Markus Ehre gives us this chance.

9.     Beside the good news your EP “Back from the Streets” gets released soon. This disc was produced at Kugelphone Studios. Could you please tell us what the listener expects?

Like I said, we all recorded something with Micha and Rene of Anticops and it feels good bein’ back again. The EP gives a short insight into the various straightness of GN! The listener will expect a piece of Berlin how we see and experience it everyday. If you want get along you mustn’t be smooth or you go down. We put all of our emotions into the songs and I think you can feel that very well. We didn’t care about in which genre you can put it or if others like it. We’re proud of what we’ve got and we notice more often the people celebrate our songs!

T   Tobi, you have the opportunity to create your perfect band. How would this band look like?

Our bass player Muddi stated: “Has there ever been a band with eight singers, 20 drummers and 50 guitar players?” Somehow, he’s right! Personal for me, I feel comfortable in GN and DC; I’ve found my “perfect” bands! But I got what the guys can’t do in my records collection.

11   Is there something else what you would like to tell?

Tobi Diepelt ist Sänger bei der Hardcoretruppe Got Nuthin’ aus Berlin und steht auch bei Denny Crane als Frontmann hinter dem Mikro. Da mich ihre Performance beim „Surviving Eastern Fest“ umgehauen hatte, lag es auf der Hand mit ihm ein Interview zu führen.

Herausgekommen ist ein interessantes Interview über Hardcore als Musik und Lifestyle, die derzeitige Situation vom Clubsterben in Berlin und noch vieles mehr.

Hardcore bedeutet Verbundenheit.

Lieber Tobi, es mir eine Freude mit dir dieses Interview führen zu dürfen.

1.)                Kannst du dich bitte unseren Lesern vorstellen?

ICH BIN EIN BERLINER ... und gebe Denny Crane und Got Nuthin’ Texte und Stimme!

2.)               Got Nuthin’ wurden 2012 gegründet. Neben dieser Band sind du und deine Bandkollegen auch in den Bands Tonedown, Denny Crane und All For Revenge aktiv. Weshalb habt ihr Got Nuthin’ ins Leben gerufen?

Wir alle lieben Oldschool Hardcore bzw. Hardcore wie er sein sollte, oder das, wofür „HC“ mal stand! Raybeez sagte mal: „...start a band...make a difference...take a stand...“. Das trifft es wohl am Besten! GN entwickelte schnell eine gewisse Eigendynamik und aus dem Spassprojekt wurde etwas Ernsthaftes. Gemerkt haben wir es, als wir unseren ersten Gig hatten. Der war in der Schweiz (Basel). Ich mein, wer ist so verrückt und fährt 1.000km mit ´nem Projekt, welches gerade mal 2 Monate existent ist?! Danach sahen wir uns an und wussten, yeah! das war geil, also: let´s do that shit!

3.)               Der Bandname Got Nuthin hat in der Englischen Sprache je nach Kontext unterschiedliche Bedeutungen. Warum habt ihr diesen Namen gewählt?

Ich denke er unterstreicht die Verbundenheit der Band zu der Musik die wir machen. Heute wird man an materiellen Gütern und Kontostand gemessen. Wir scheissen darauf und machen lieber Musik. Das gehört für uns zu den wirklich wichtigen Dingen im Leben. Die Freude an der Musik! Und wenn das in den Augen der Gesellschaft „nichts“ ist ... dann haben wir eben „nichts“!

4.)               In Berlin, wo ihr herkommt, gibt es eine grosse Musikszene aller Genres. Und vor einiger Zeit habe ich im Internet gelesen, dass viele Clubs in Berlin Wohnungen weichen sollen. Wie steht es angesichts des derzeitigen Clubsterbens um die alternative Musikszene?

Die Alternative Szene wird mit der Mittel- und Unterschicht aus dem Stadtkern getrieben. Ganze Bezirke gleichen mittlerweile einer Partymeile für Neureiche. Alternative Kunst und Musik sind nur gut genug für das Marketing aber es geht nur noch um Kohle, nicht um Kultur. Berlin ist eine sehr schnelllebige Stadt geworden. Vieles verändert sich.

Wir bedauern das sehr und sind teilweise sehr verärgert darüber, denn keiner von uns hat den Nerv in einem New-Manhattan zu leben! Um zu verstehen wie es uns mit dieser Situation geht empfehle ich Euch den Song „Lost in Berlin“ von Denny Crane!

5.)                Vor kurzem hat die GEMA (Die Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und Vervielfältigungsrechte) bekannt gegeben, die Gebühren massiv zu erhöhen. In Zahlen wäre das um ca. 600 Prozent für den Livesektor. Das könnte bedeuten dass ab sofort viele Clubs vor dem Aus stehen, weil sie bei Konzerten mehr Gelder an diese Instution abliefern müssten. Deswegen gab es auch einen lautstarken Protest vor deren Sitz in Berlin. Was kannst du uns aus deiner Sicht über die Situation berichten?

Für viele Clubs wäre das der wirtschaftliche, also für die Stadt ein kultureller Ruin, denn die meisten Clubs haben das Geld einfach nicht. Ich finde es gut und richtig dagegen zu demonstrieren! Aber wie eben schon mal gesagt: es geht nur noch um Kohle, nicht um Kultur! Leider! Ich hoffe beide Seiten können sich da noch auf einen fairen Kurs einigen, alles andere macht für mich keinen Sinn.

6.)                Mittlerweile gibt es ja verschiedene Hardcore Szenen u.a. Old School, New School aber auch Beatdown Hardcore. Was bedeutet für dich „Hardcore“?

Hardcore ist mehr als Musik. Es ist ein Ventil. Es ist ein Weg sein Leben zu bewältigen. Es bedeutet Verbundenheit. Es ist eine Art sich auszudrücken.

7.)                 Welche Musiker haben dich persönlich geprägt?   

            Ich hab schon immer so viel Musik gehört, verschiedenste Genres, verschiedene Künstler.  Meine ersten HC Scheiben waren DMS von Madball und „Ground Zero“ von Ryker’s! Das war so mit  14,15. Ich glaube das das Leben mit all seinen Hochs und Tiefs mich am meisten geprägt hat.

8.      Ihr habt vor ein paar Tagen auf Facebook bekannt gegeben, dass ihr einen Deal mit District 763 Records an Land gezogen habt. Wie ist es dazu gekommen?

District ist das Label auf dem Tonedown sind und wir haben alle mit unseren 3 anderen Bands im Kugelphone Studio produziert. So hat sich das in dem Bekanntenkreis dann einfach so ergeben. Wir freuen uns sehr das Markus Ehre uns diese Chance gibt.

9.)               Neben diesen guten Nachrichten wird auch bald eure EP „Back from the Streets“ auf die Hardcore und Metalgemeinde losgelassen. Produziert wurde diese Disc in den Kugelphone Studios. Kannst du uns darüber Auskunft geben was den Hörer erwartet?

Wie gesagt, wir haben alle vorher mit Micha und Rene von den Anticops schon mal etwas aufgenommen und sind gern wieder zurück. Die EP ist ein kurzer Einblick in die vielseitige Gradlinigkeit von GN! Den Hörer wird ein Stück Berlin erwarten wie wir es sehen und tagtäglich erleben. Wenn Du hier klar kommen willst, darfst du nicht zimperlich sein, dann gehst du unter. Wir haben all unsere Emotionen in die Songs gesteckt und das

kann man, wie ich finde, sehr gut fühlen. Uns war es egal, in welche Schublade man das packen kann oder ob es anderen gefällt. Wir sind stolz auf das, was wir da haben und als positiven Effekt stellen wir immer häufiger fest, dass die Leute unser Lieder feiern!

10.)            Tobi, du hast jetzt die Möglichkeit deine perfekte Band zusammenzustellen. Wie würde sie deiner Meinung nach aussehen?

Unser Basser Muddy meinte zu der Frage: „gab es schon mal eine Band mit 8 Sängern, 20 Drummern und 50 Gitarristen?“ Da hat er irgendwie recht!

Ich für meinen Teil fühle mich sehr gut aufgehoben bei GN und DC, ich habe meine „perfekten“ Bands also gefunden! Alles was die Jungs nicht können habe ich dann im Plattenregal zu Hause haha!

11.)            Möchtest du abschliessend noch gerne was loswerden?
